Jaime Jarrin, Leaving a Legacy For The Next Generation

Third Annual Jaime and Blanca Jarrin Foundation Golf Classic, sponsored by Los Defensores, raises funds for college scholarships for underserved youth in Southern California. Golf Classic to take place at San Gabriel Country Club, Aug. 21.

Los Angeles, CA–When Jaime Jarrín completed his illustrious 64-year broadcasting career in 2022 that saw him call six World Series titles for the Los Angeles Dodgers, many asked, “What’s next?”

The “next” is the focal point for Jarrín, who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998. In his final years of being “La Voz de los Dodgers,” he founded the Jaime and Blanca Jarrín Foundation, with the goal of funding college scholarships for underserved young people who represent what’s next. The next generation of broadcasters. Of journalists. Of attorneys.

On Aug. 21, the Third Annual Jaime and Blanca Jarrín Foundation Golf Classic, sponsored by Los Defensores, is taking place at San Gabriel Country Club, with a collection of Dodger greats and friends from the media and entertainment industries participating to help raise awareness and funds for college scholarships awarded to future recipients.

“As an immigrant, I came to this wonderful country with a dream, full of hope,” Jarrín said. “A dream inspired and encouraged by my then new partner in life, my wife, Blanca. I have been blessed, and if I can impart that hope and help to another seeking to fulfill their dreams, then my time in this world has been truly worth the work and sacrifice. That's something Blanca and I shared.”

Expected to attend the event are some of the greatest Dodgers Jarrín had the pleasure to announce their baseball exploits: Fernando Valenzuela, Orel Hershiser, Adrian Gonzalez, Mike Scioscia, Mickey Hatcher, Shawn Green and James Loney. Also joining for golf and post-event festivities are Lynette Romero, Alysha Del Valle, Omar Velasco, John Hartung, Raymond Cruz, Luis Rivas and Christopher McDonald.

Since its initial golf tournament in 2019, the Jaime and Blanca Jarrín Foundation, in partnership with Los Defensores, have awarded more than $85,000 in college scholarships to underserved students, mostly Latinos in Southern California. The goal has been to attempt to bridge the education gap for young people who come from communities where a college education may be just a dream because of the financial commitment.

Through the relationship with Los Defensores, the primary targets have been young people with the goals of careers in journalism or the law. In California alone, 39 percent of the population is Latino, according to the Public Policy Institute of California. Of those, only about 15 percent earn a college degree. And just six percent of attorneys and 12 percent of journalists in the state are of Latino descent. The Jarrín Foundation and Los Defensores are aiming to bridge that gap.

“Our goal and effort here is to inspire the Latino community, especially those who may not have ready opportunities to attend college or to further their education,” said Ben Henderson, CEO of Los Defensores.

Many who have appeared at past Jarrin Foundation events feel the same way.

“When you know that you have that support group behind you, whether it’s a mentorship, whether it’s monetarily, whatever it may be, it’s huge for anybody in life,” said six-time All-Star and current SportsNet LA Broadcaster Nomar Garciaparra.

Foursomes and sponsorship opportunities are still available for this grand event. Presiding in his stately fashion will be Jarrín, who is on a lifetime contract with the Dodgers as an ambassador for the organization.

“Having so many of my friends from the Dodgers and in the entertainment industry join us to lend support for the work our foundation and Los Defensores are doing for future generations is so special for me,” Jarrín said. “To think that young people who might not otherwise be able to attend college now have that great opportunity, it’s something that makes me so proud. I know my wife Blanca is somewhere smiling because this was a dream we shared.”
